KEY MEETING OF THE EXTENDED COLLEGE OF CSOs AT THE EITI: TOWARDS A PROMISING OCTOBER VALIDATION

On 23 May 2023, a critical meeting was held at the Permanent Secretariat of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) at Bastos, Yaoundé. The conference brought together representatives of the extended college of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) who are members of the Multi-Stakeholder Group (MSG) to discuss preparations for the EITI Validation scheduled for October.

The meeting was marked by the participation of various CSOs, each of which has a crucial role to play in achieving this Validation. The moderator, Mr MBALLA MBALLA Jean from CRADEC, warmly welcomed the participants and underlined the importance of this face-to-face meeting to strengthen collaboration.

Two key points were on the agenda :

1. Presentation of the EITI October Validation Mini Contingency Plan 

Mr. Michel BISSOU of the Permanent Secretariat presented the plan, highlighting its role in preparing for Validation. Discussions focused on the importance of respecting safeguard clauses, improving performance, and administrative, technical and financial preparation.

2. Presentation of the 2021 & 2022 Annual Progress Reports 

Ms AHOUPE Corinne shared the annual reports, highlighting the achievements and challenges over the years.

The meeting concluded with recommendations to improve the coordination and effectiveness of the extended CSO constituency, including the distribution of documents, online consultation to plan the next meeting, and the requirement to provide documented information on EITI-related activities.

This meeting reinforced the determination of all parties to contribute to a successful October Validation, marking an important step in promoting transparency in the extractive industries in Cameroon.
